today, i'm marrying my bestfriend

Today, I’m marrying my best friend
The one who is always beside me
Smiling proudly in my moments of triumph
Who is a shoulder to cry on
And a hand who encourages and guides
Who, with my rejoicing comes his laughter
And with my sadness starts his tears
He has a smile that makes my world sparkle
A laughter that turns my day brighter
And a heart that will love me forever

Today is the realization of our dreams
Of our deepest longing and fondest wish
Today, two lives have come together
To complete both and become one
We are two different hearts beating
Two different melodies blending
To create a new harmony
A wonderful song
We will always carry in our hearts

Today, it’s just you and I
And the love that will bind us
It will continue to unfold, to grow and to strengthen
To offer support, comfort and encouragement
The bond will always remain
For love will never fade,
Will never leave,
Will never fail –
For love, our love is forever.

What’s with “I’m marrying my best friend.”

This poem is so close to my heart that I hope it was mine. Of course, it is mine. I wrote it in October 2000 – but I have written it, not for myself, nor for my wedding and neither for my bestfriend. It was for a very good friend when she said I do to her best friend.

It started when we we’re looking for songs for her wedding. She had a slideshow presentation of all the pictures of their almost 9 years of courtship and engagement and we were searching for the best musical score. As I was going through the songs she preliminary picked out, I found the inspiration for the poem and with what I could do for her requested musical scoring.

I actually patterned it from the song “the first time I loved forever”, the themesong of tv drama of the late ‘80’s “beauty and the beast” which starred linda hamilton (of terminator 2) and ron pearlman (hellboy). The song had excerpts of the poem “somewhere I have never travelled” by e e cummings (one of my favorites poems of all time; you can check out my separate post about that).

After writing I’m marrying my best friend, i asked for her preferred music (which turned out to be “in my life” by ronan keating) and I tapped my friends from recording and came out with this. (you may click on the link to listen to the song).

Although, just like in “the first time I loved forever” where they used only paragraph 1, 3 and 5 of ‘somewhere I have never travelled”, there were some parts of the poem that was not included in the song version.

I hope you feel the pure emotion of the poem – just like when I wrote it. Each time I read it, I can feel the emotion that inspired me to write it. But I have given the rights to the poem to my friend, a gift and a legacy – it was like giving a part of myself to her and her husband.
